Andy Shepard

Security Team Leader

"I've been part of the security team at the Scottish Government in Edinburgh for over 9 years, working my way up the grades to become Security Team Leader. I work a standard 42-hour week, but there's often the chance for overtime. We do a shift pattern covering 24 hours a day – and days and nights cover different kinds of duties. A day shift will generally include more reception duties, whereas a back shift or a night shift will have more security duties.

Every day I get to meet all sorts of people, from members of the public to Ministers. On the security side, me and my team are responsible for everyone and everything in the building. I enjoy having to react to things as they happen and the fact that every day offers new challenges, because, in this job, you never know what's round the next corner."
